Chief advisor calls on UN to develop effective mechanisms to combat disinformation

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called on the UN to develop effective mechanisms to combat disinformation and provide support to the media in maintaining ethical standards.

He made the call when he paid a courtesy call on UNESCO Bangladesh Representative Susan Vise and UNESCO’s Senior Project Officer for Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists Mehdi Benchelah at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday.

They met ahead of the release of the report titled ‘Assessment of the Media Environment in Bangladesh: Focusing on Independent, Impartial and Multidimensional Media’ jointly prepared by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNESCO.

The Chief Advisor said, “We are really waiting for this report.” He said, “Our main problem is disinformation, fake news. And some of this disinformation is spread by people abroad, and in some cases, local people are also involved in it. This attack is happening continuously.

The Chief Advisor said, “Not only through digital means, but also the regular media often become a source of false information.” In this context, he sought the active role of the United Nations and said, “You should not only talk to the government, but also talk to the media.”

The Chief Advisor said, “There is a need for an independent regulatory system. If any media repeatedly spreads false information, then they should be reminded that they are not trustworthy.”
